Description
This is an interesting collection by the famous photographer W. L. Drummond.  Drummond is known for his photo of the end of World War I entitled "Germany Surrenders W.L. Drummond, 72 Wall Street" (see photo). This collection  consists of 136 original photos by Dummond of great works of art with linen backing. Most of the photos are stamped:  W. L. Drummond Expert in Photography 72 Wall Street, N.Y." on the back. It appears that this collection of photos of rare oil paintings  was part of a court exhibit in the litigation of Duveen vs Wakefield, Hicks, et al. It is a good example of Drummond's work as well a part of art history. It was purchased by my Grandfather in the 1920s. Joseph Duveen (1869-1939) was one of the most influential art dealers of all time.  [Information]. 136 original photographs of artwork and equipment in Joseph Duveen's studio, presented as exhibits in the legal case of Duveen vs. Wakefield, Hicks et al. Multiple photos of many art pieces, some duplicates. Size varies, generally 10 x 12 to 13 x 9 in. Includes 98 photographs of artwork by Joshua Reynolds, Francesco Fiorentino, Piero Poudapaolo, Van Dyck, Cossimo Rosselli, Cuyp, Hoppner, Hobbema, Rubens, Sellajo, and others; and 32 copies of 15 portraits, 26 photos of Madonna and similar scenes, 34 photos of landscape and livestock atwork, etc., including 38 photos of equipment from Duveen's studio and the backings of paintings.   Duveen (1869-1939) became one of the wealthiest art dealers in history by purchasing paintings from European nobility and selling them to wealthy Americans, including William Randolph Hearst, John D. Rockefeller, Samuel H. Kress, Henry E.  Huntington, J.P. Morgan, Andrew Mellon, and Henry Clay Frick as well as Hollywood moguls. Duveen greatly increasewd the art trade in bringing great works of art from Europe to the U.S.  The key to Duveen's success was his simple observation that while Europe had the art, America had the money.  Duveen eventually became  "the greatest art dealer" and sometimes described as the "art roque".  (See "Duveen: A Life in Art"" by Meryle Secrest; Universiuty of Chicago Press 2005).   Duveen played a large part in forming many of the art collections in American museums, i.e. the Frick collection, and the Mellon and Kress collections now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. etc.    Many of his sales and authentications have since been found to be fraudulent. The lawsuit for which the photos were taken stemmed from an earlier suit against Duveen in 1920 alleging unscrupulousness in his authentication of a da Vinci painting. Some of these paitings have since disappeared. Condition Report Some loose, all laid or bound in cloth album. Chipping to album leaves, photographs good - very good, with some creasing and minor toning, most are rubber stamped generally on verso.
