Description
mauvewendy7 Store HM Queen Victoria (1819-1901) Queen of England (1837-1901).  Up for auction an Authentic and Early Pair Of HM Queen Victoria's Mourning Stockings c1861, which have been worn by her. If you lost out to the Museum in England that aquired a pair for $14300.00 in the auction on September 3rd 2008 this is another opportunity to bid for an extremely rare pair of stockings. The destiny which led to Queen Victoria's birth started on November 6th 1817, this was the day that Princess Charlotte only child of King George 1V formerly the Prince Regent died in childbirth. Parliament advised the brothers of the King that if they produced an heir to the throne their debts would be paid off, the race was on. The Duke of Kent married a German Princess, a widow with two children, she gave birth to Queen Victoria in Kensington Palace on May 24th 1819. Although the other Royal brothers had children with their respective spouse's only the Duke of Kent's daughter survived, she was now an heir to the throne after her father and his elder brother Prince William Duke of York. Queen Victoria's father died while she was very young and her Uncle William succeeded George 1V as King William 1V, she was now one heartbeat from the throne of England. Queen Victoria became Queen of England on June 20th 1837, she was eighteen years of age and a wonderful future lay before her. She married her cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha on February 10th 1840 and they had nine children, but after only twenty years of marriage he died of stomach cancer. Previously she had worn pale pink silk stockings but upon becoming a widow she wore black clothing for the rest of her life. This included a unique style of black silk stockings, the soles and the tops were white silk and as with most of her clothing they had her monogram on them. Queen Victoria had a long life and a long reign, she celebrated her Golden and Diamond Jubilee's surrounded by her enormous family most of whom ruled Europe. She died on January 22nd 1901 at Osborne, the seaside home that she and Albert had built together, aged 82 years, some say that her last word was Bertie but maybe it was her beloved Albert that she saw as she passed into history. Both of the stockings have the Crown and VR emblem, one stocking has a One number under this and the other stocking has a number two under the emblem, both stockings have a stitched and embroidered black arrow pointing upwards from the foot. Only one stocking has the cotton garter loop left on it, this stocking has a small smudge on the heel. Both stockings are washed and pressed this was done when Queen Victoria was alive, the other stocking has a very small color loss near the top, this is unnoticeable. On this foot are two very small beautifully repaired areas also unnoticeable, would Queen Victoria have worn "darned" stockings of course she would. The Queen was quite frugal, her daughter Princess Victoria once asked her to send her a new baby's feeding bowl, the Queen told her to return the old bowl first. Prince Charles when a young boy lost a dog leash, his mother Queen Elizabeth11 told him to find it as dog leash's cost money. Queen Victoria employed a lady called Ann Birkin who darned and embroidered the Queens garments including her stockings for over 60 years.
