It is about 1/2 thick with a backer board to hang something in the slots? Some leather was on the back, a little of it can be seen in the photo of the back. It was in the house my parents have owned for 40 years, in Lowell Mass, the house was built in 1880's so no idea exactly how old it is, but every early 1900's or older is my best guess. It also is one piece of wood and "NO BACKER" Just wood. I hope this helps.
