Description
Hi, Well sometimes you handle something truly amazing, and sometimes you handle something truly historic, this Hallicrafters SX- 42 with it's original speaker is both. This is it's story. It's 1948-49 at The University Of Chicago and Physicist Enrico Fermi is developing his 170-inch Synchrocyclotron, and assembling his control room with John Marshall and Herbert Anderson. The receiver serial no.HA 93056, which is pictured, was chosen to monitor the radio frequency spectrum of the atom smasher. It is in figure #6 photograph in the 48-49 Progress Report Book and is included with the receiver and speaker Mod. R-42. If you Google: University Of Chicago Synchrocyclotron, it is clearly visible behind Fermi's shoulder as he's seated. After Fermi's death in 1954 a very dear friend of mine that I have known for many years was fresh out of college and was hired by the University Of Chicago as a Synchrocyclotron operator, working in the control room daily as well as other duties related to it's constant operation. His Masters was in the field of electronics and he stayed at the University for many years working with a scientific staff member named T. J. Peterson. When the reactor was dismantled and the 2200 ton magnet sent to the new Fermi Lab in Batavia, the control room was scraped, all that was saved was this receiver and it's speaker. When it was installed in the control room the cover was removed and was lost Peterson was allowed to keep the equipment and both men developed similar interests in Ham Radio and watch repair. After Peterson's passing my friend came into possesssion of them both. He's pictured proudly standing behind it in one of the pictures, having been at ground zero at the dawn of the Atomic Age. The book is very important to the science history of the building and operation and people involved. There is an interesting list in back of everyone who was sent a copy from Commanding Officers to Professor's, but no one outside the United States It's not like you can find this in a price guide somewhere, or take it to the Roadshow, so where do you start. One thing is for sure, Enrico Fermi had his hands on this equipment daily and it's all that survived, otherwise it's just another Hallicrafter Complete documentation will come with it, Good Luck, I feel like Buck Rogers. John
