Description
Here is a remarkable and extremely rare lot of Bermuda art and art history with provenance! The lot includes three items, all of which came out of descendant John Tucker Abbott’s estate in Bedford, Massachusetts. The showpiece of the lot is an original watercolor titled “Royal Palms / Bermuda”– by one of the two Tucker sisters (Kate [C.F.] or Ethel -- I don't know which. It is less likely but possible that the watercolor is by their mother, artist Leonora Tucker -- see the Bermuda National Gallery: http://www.postcardcollections.fsnet.co.uk/artists/bng.htm The Tucker sisters achieved such fame as artists that both Queen Mary and the Duke of Windsor purchased Tuckers and hung their work in the Royal Collection. For more on the Tuckers, see http://www.postcardcollections.fsnet.co.uk/artists/tuckers.htm and http://www.postcard.co.uk/themes_tucker.php The watercolor I am offering is signed “Tucker 1917”, measures approximately 3” x 5.25” and is attractively mounted in an approximately 9.25” x 11.75” gold frame. What distinguishes this watercolor -- apart from its beauty and its brilliant execution -- is its very early date of creation – 1917, much earlier than the mid 1940s watercolors by Ethel Tucker that have appeared in auctions such as these: http://www.treadwaygallery.com/search.php?skeyword=ethel+tucker&submit=Search&auctionID=16 The second item in this three-part lot is an approximately 9.5” x 7” black and white photograph (a six-inch or so crease affects the photo's top right-hand corner) of “Charles Matthew Abbott & Frances (Tucker) Abbott / Watertown, Mass. With their four sons: John, Matthew, Tucker and Charles (Peter)”. The final item further establishes the provenance of the watercolor: it is a framed black and white triptych (three photographs of the Tucker home and lane in Bermuda) in an art deco frame measuring approximately 17” x 8” and described on the back as “’THE ARCHES’ / PAGET, BERMUDA / Home of Frances Tucker, parents: & Richard J. & Leonora Tucker, grandparents of John Tucker ABBOTT”. I thought about putting this in a major auction but I’ve decided that a greater number of Tucker enthusiasts and Bermuda art collectors will see it here. Thank you for your interest!
