The gens Pompeia, who gave the name to the ancient city, was of Oscan origins. A settlement probably first appeared in this area around the 7th century BC. The city remains very influential until she was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. The ashes from the eruption practically buried the entire city and were discovered in 1748, since then excavation has provided an extraordinary detailed insight into the life of the Pompeian and today the site is listed in the Unesco World Heritage Site.
