Description
Pre-Ban Ivory Ruler Circa 1850 This 12 inch ruler is made from a single slice of old pre-ban African Elephant ivory. It was part of a Mappin Brothers, Sheffield, England travel writting desk set. The Mappin Brothers were in business at London Bridge in Sheffield in 1852 and were only partners for a few years. The ruler was finely engraved like scrimshaw and then inked to achieve the lines, numbers, and divisions. This a 12 inch ruler with 1/8 inch graduations. It is 1-1/16 inches wide. The ivory has a wonderful glossy patina and very visable grain and crosshatching. The condition is excellent. This would be a great addition to any collection. Note; This item will ship to US addresses only.
