Description
Original 1927 Warranty Deed for Charles Maxwell Hospital RARE piece of Southeastern Colorado (Prowers County) History. Charles Maxwell Hospital 1927 to 1945 when it was sold to the Sacred Heart Nuns and known as Sacred Heart Hospital and later known as Prowers Medical Center located on South Main Street/Highway 287 in Lamar, Colorado. Land was originally purchased by The Charles Maxwell Investment Company in 1927 from Marsena J. McMillin so that Mr. Charles Maxwell could build the Hospital.  According to the warranty deed the late Mr. Charles Maxwell paid Marsena J. McMillin $1500.00 on October 15, 1927. The Deed shows that Maxwell purchased Lots 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 in Block 79 in the Holmes and Parmenter Addition in the town of Lamar, Prowers County, Colorado. In the middle of the 1920's Marsena J. McMillin, and others recognized the need for a Prowers County hospital. Mr. McMillin owned block 79 in the Holmes-Parmenter addition of Lamar, which consisted of 12 lots with a then value of $500.00 each.  In his zeal to see a hospital built he offered it to Prowers County free of charge, but with one stipulation that no one would ever be refused admittance because of race, color, creed, or the inability to pay. Unfortunately there was not enough support to build the hospital and the county was unable to proceed. At this time Charles Maxwell, a pioneer of the area who recognized the need for a hospital, came forward and stated that he would build the hospital with his own funds if McMillin would sell him the block for $1500.00, which McMillin did.  Mr. Charles Maxwell then proceeded to construct the hospital himself. It should be noted that while the deed to Mr. Maxwell did not contain the stipulation noted above, Mr. Maxwell adhered strictly to it principals, and even went further by often feeding the poor and indigent at "his table" in the basement of the hospital. The late Mildred Maxwell King stated that her father "donated every penny for construction of the Charles Maxwell Hospital later known as Sacred Heart Hospital. The Charles Maxwell Investment Company had other operating interests in Lamar, Colorado that included : The Maxwell House Hotel, The Maxwell Implement and Truck Company, Maxwell Furniture Company, and The Valley State Bank. Documents are in pristine condition. Included with Warranty Deed are Special Assessment ledger page on Lots 1-6 dated October 8, 1927.  Cut from Lamar Daily News, May 7, 1974, obituary for Mrs. Curtis (Coral) Gentry, daughter of Mr. Marsena J. McMillin and Mary McMillin, and correction to obituary written by Dr. James C. McMillin. Complete Lamar Daily News Newpaper (pages 1 thru 6) dated Thursday, October 25, 1979 with front page obituary for Mildred Maxwell King, daughter of Charles Maxwell and Mary Maxwell. Type written note where Mildred Maxwell states that Mrs. Gentrys' obituary is erroneous, and that her father purchased the land from McMillin for $1500.00 on October 15, 1927, and that Charles Maxwell her father "donated every penny for construction of the Charles Maxwell Hospital". Last but not least the envelope from the Charles Maxwell Investment Co.. Documentation on envelope, is that of Mrs. Mildred Maxwell King, in her own hand. Documents have been stored in this envelope all of these years. Sweet little piece of history tucked away for the last 81 years. All reasonable offers will be considered. Please email any questions.
