Description
# 1.) BUCKILAND ROMANI TAROT 1st Edition by Raymond Buckland and Lissanne Lake...This Romani Tarot set includes all 78 original cards in near Mint condition with no rips, tears, or cuts. The 239 page 1st Edition Book in near Mint Condition, has no rips, tears or cuts, and the Set's box has no rips, tears, or cuts. From the Internet: The Buckland Romani Tarot deck is a gorgeous deck. Artist Lissanne Lake did a truly inspired job of bringing Buckland's visions of English Gypsy life around the time of the Second World War to life. The borderless cards allow plenty of room for the art. If you collect tarot decks for their art, you'll probably want to just skip the rest of the review and buy the deck. While some cards are more detailed than others (particularly with respect to faces), the overall artistic quality of this deck is very high and prices on eBay and the internet are reflective. Although the symbols are drawn from English Gypsy life, this is a fairly traditional deck which makes it easy for the average tarot reader to use. The suits are renamed Bolers (Wheels), Koros (Cups), Kosh (Staves), and Chiv (Knives) and the Major Arcana are numbered but not named. While these minor changes only take a few minutes to get used to, they enhance the Romani feel of the deck. The deck can be used with the traditional "Rider-Waite" interpretations, however, Buckland provides expanded descriptions / interpretations for each card in the book that comes with the set. Buckland gives long description of each card filled with interesting tidbits about Gypsy life (his father was a full-blooded English Gypsy). To accompany the traditional meanings, he usually asks questions about the card. For example, for the Two of Koshes (Wands) he asks questions like: "Is the Rom waiting for someone? If so, is that person late in arriving? Or is the Rom seeing off someone who has been there with him?" Buckland's intent seems to be to get the reader to focus on the card image and the multiple things it could be saying instead of on the traditional "book meanings." The book also includes advice on giving readings and some spreads to use. The Buckland Romani Tarot deck is one of the better new decks I've seen recently. Of course, I'm a bit biased because it looks like one of the few decks that I will be able to read with regularly. If you are in the market for a new -- or first -- Tarot deck, I strongly suggest taking a look at this one. The Romani Tarot beautiful to look at, different enough to spark your senses as you read with it, yet traditional enough to be easy to use. # 2.) TAROCCO Marsella TAROT DECK in Piemontese (Italian) Made in Italy by Modiano A very Fine plastic Marseille pattern and symbolism, no booklet 78 cards in New/Mint Condition as well as the box. Cards 22 major and 56 minor 2 1/2” x 4 1/4” long. # 3.) VINTAGE EL TAROT De Marsella TAROT DECK in Spanish Made in Spain by EDAF and Paul MarteauPaul Marteau was a card historian, a collector of playing cards, in which he followed his uncle, Georges Marteau. The collections of Georges and Paul Marteau are now the basis for the French Biblioteque Nationale's collection. Paul Marteau was also a card manufacturer, a grandnephew of Baptiste-Paul Grimaud (1817-1899). In 1920 he took over the management of the family business (founded in the mid-19th century) at the death of his father, Leo Marteau, who was a brother to Georges Marteau. Paul Marteau, who had a doctor's degree in philosophy, was intrigued by the ancient Marseille pattern and by tarot symbolism. In his restoration, he stayed with the original pattern, concentrating to clarify the forms and the colors. The result of this work is the Grimaud edition of the Marseilles pattern, which is what most tarotists nowadays believe is The Marseilles pattern. In 1949 Paul Marteau's treatise on the symbolism of the Marseille "Le Tarot de Marseille", was published, an exclusive book with glued-on colored prints of all 78 cards. Cards 22 major and 56 minor 2 3/4” x 5” long with the booklet in Spanish are in Excellent Condition with no rip creases or tears. The box has seen it’s better days - condition. # 4.) Original 1981 VINTAGE CAGLIOSTRO TAROT DECK The tarot called Cagliostro is based upon an older, more classic approach to the Tarot, in a lot of ways it resembles the Tarot of Marseilles. The Cagliostro deck was published in 1912, three years after the Rider-Waite Tarot was published. Bruno Sigon was the painter for this deck. The Major Arcana follow the Egyptian style as prescribed by Papus. The ordering of the trumps also follows these teachings, placing the Fool (seen in this deck as The Madman) at the end of the Majors instead of the beginning. Cards 22 major and 56 minor 2 1/2” x 4 1/4” long with the booklet are in Excellent/Mint with no rip creases or tears Condition. The box has a little ware but still in Excellent condition. # 5.) Le Jeu de Tarot, The Book of Thoth By Piatnik, Vienna Le Jeu de Tarot is a traditional French card game. It is NOT the same as tarot cards. It is more along the lines of bridge. However, my use of this Tarot Deck is composed of 78 mysteries (maps) with 22 major arcane mysteries and 56 minors organized into 4 categories or elements: The money (earth elements), ploes (fire), swords (air), and cups (water). The box, leaflet, and cards are in Mint/New condition. The cards measure 2 1/2” x 4 1/2". # 6.) Vintage Tarot 1JJ Cards 1970 By S.R. Kaplan This deck is published in Switzerland by AGMuller and distributed in the U.S. by U.S. Games Systems. It was first published in 1831 by a predecessor firm of AGMuller and has been somewhat modified over the years. It is of great historical interest, as it is the first Tarot deck that U.S. Games Systems sold, making it an important factor in the history of the Tarot renaissance currently being experienced in this country. This is the original 1970 Deck. These cards are in Used Condition. The box is Used and Stained and the instructions are in Excellent Condition. The cards measure 2 1/2” x 4 3/8". # 7.) Vintage Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling Cards Witch Fortune Telling Cards are based on the divination system of Mlle. Le Normand, a French mystic practicing in the early 19th century. Mlle. Le Normand is said to have predicted the rise and fall of Napoleon. Each card in this non-tarot deck has a number, a short interpretation and a mini-picture illustrating the card's meaning. This deck can also be used as a regular playing card deck. The standard 52-card (plus two Jokers) faces are given in the upper-left corners, and two jokers are included. The short instruction booklet gives two reading methods geared toward this novelty deck. These cards are in Excellent Condition. The box is Very Good and the instructions are in Excellent Condition. The cards measure 2 5/8” x 3 1/2" # 8.) Medieval Scapini Tarot The cards of the Medieval Scapini Tarot recreate the Middle Ages of Europe with symbolism, costume and setting. The gold backgrounds of the court cards and the Major Arcana recall the great tarocchi of 15th century Italy, and many images on the cards are inspired by masterpieces of the Renaissance. The symbolism combines medieval icons with the esoteric traditions that became publicly known in the 18th century. Alchemical processes color the cards. Many clues - often humorous - to the meanings of the cards are half-hidden in the intricate pictures. Luigi Scapini, the creator of the Medieval Scapini Tarot, says, "I have always been interested in symbols, including them in my paintings. Many symbols that I 'invented' intuitively were affirmed by my discovery that they had been used by other artists long ago." The Cards 22 major/56 minor are 2 3/4" x 5 1/8". There is no box and the booklet and cards are in used Good Condition. # 9.) Tarot Universal Dali GILT EDGED EDITION The Tarot Universal Dali is a deck created by the artist Salvador Dali. Each card is a collage blending Dali's own signature drawings, icons and splashes of color with images from various artistic sources. The cards are each individually signed and edged in gold. The magician and rey de oros (king of pentacles) appear to be self-portraits (see below). On the major arcana cards, the name is given in English at the top and Spanish at the bottom with a Hebrew letter and astrological reference. Names in Spanish are on the court cards, but not the numbered suit cards. The Tarot Universal Dali comes in a sturdy cardboard inner case with a red velvet outer case. The instruction booklet offers a few spreads and brief descriptions for the major arcana cards in four languages. This deck is in Near Mint condition. Cards 22 major/56 minor are 3 1/8" x 5 1/2".
