This single loop basket was designed with roping twist endings and a wide base. It measures approximately 7 inches wide on the bottom then flares out to 10-1/2 inches from rim to rim, 3 -1/2 to 3 -3/4 inches tall, and 13 inches long from handle to handle.  Materials used are pine needles, sweetgrass and palmetto leaves. This basket would be an excellent centerpiece, fruit basket, or used as a serving dish. My baskets are originals made by me. They are very sturdy and no broken stitches. I offer free repairs on baskets bought from me only! However. if you follow the special care instructions that will be included with your purchase, the basket can last a lifetime. Sweet grass basket making has been part of the Charleston and Mt. Pleasant communities for more than 300 years. Brought to the area by slaves who came from West Africa, basket making is a traditional art form which has been passed on from generation to generation. Today, it is one of the oldest art forms of African origin in the United States. And it is the only source of income for some people in Charleston and Mt. Pleasant. It takes a lot of time and effort to weave a basket, and it saddens me to see that some people are passing of imitations made out of broom straws and hard plastic as Gullah sweet grass baskets. The imitations are wrapped close together, especially the very top portion. The Gullah sweet grass baskets are woven with the palmetto fronds approximately 1/2 inches apart.  Don't be fooled by imitations! Buy the original!
