Description
The ribbon shows General Winfield Scott known as "America’s Most Distinguished Soldier". The ribbon has the wording "The Hero of Many Battles, Churubusco, Lundy's Lane, Chippewa, Vera Cruz, Cerro Gorda, Mexico". Under the first part of the wording is an oval portrait of General Winfield Scott. There is another vignette on the bottom 1/2 of the ribbon which shows soldiers on a battlefield. The following wording is above the scene: "Let Us Die Arms In Hand, Our Country Demands 'The Sacrifice' ".The ribbon measures 7 1/16" long by 3 3/4" wide. This wonderful silk ribbon was issued sometime after General Winfield Scott had participated in the five different battles which are mentioned on the ribbon. It is our thought that the ribbon was probably issued during Winfield Scott's campaign for the presidency on the Whig Party ticket in 1852. But, we are not absolutely certain as to the exact date of issue of the ribbon. Obviously it would have been issued some time after the battle of Churubusco (the latest battle mentioned) which was fought on 20 August 1847. It is our thought that the ribbon was issued for his campaign as a promotion mentioning some of the famous battles that he fought in.General Winfield Scott is shown in an oval near the top section of the ribbon. Winfield Scott was born on 13 June 1786 & died on 29 May 1866. Scott was a U. S. Army general, a diplomat, & a presidential candidate. He served as a general longer than any other man in American History. In his military career, as a general, which spanned approximately 50 years he commanded forces in the War of 1812, The Mexican-American War, The Black Hawk War, The 2nd Seminole War, & The American Civil War.He conceived the Union strategy known as the Anaconda Plan which would be used to defeat the Confederacy. He became a national hero after the Mexican War. He served as military Governor of Mexico City.In 1852 Winfield Scott ran on the Whig Party ticket in the U.S. presidential election. Scott lost the general presidential election to Franklin Pierce. But, Scott remained a popular national figure & in 1856 Scott received a promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General. Scott was the 1st American since George Washington to hold that rank.General Winfield Scott participated in the battles of Lundy's Lane & Chippewa in Canada during the War of 1812. Scott won a victory in the battle of Chippewa in Canada. The battle of Lundy's Lane, which was one of the bloodiest battles ever fought in Canada, was fought on 25 July 1814. The battle was fought in the area of what is now Niagara Falls. It is historically unclear as to whether the Americans under Scott or the British forces won the battle of Lundy's Lane. However, the result of the battle is historically clear in that the American invasion of Canada was turned back. Also, General Scott was seriously injured in this battle.33 years later Scott participated in the battles of Churubusco, Vera Cruz, & Cerro Gorda in 1847 during the Mexician-American War. During the battle of Cerro Gorda which took place in April 1847 Scott defeated Santa Anna. The battle of Churubusco took place on August 20th 1847.The defeat of the Mexican Army at Churbusco left the U. S. Army only 5 Miles away from Mexico City. After the battle General Twiggs (who fought under Scott) saluted the Mexican commanders with military decorum & asked General Anaya to hand over his ammunition. Anyaya is reputed to have replied "If I had any ammunition, you would not be here."After the victory at Churubusco Scott's army was only 5 miles from Mexico City. A month later, after an abortive ceasefire & failed negotiations, Mexico City fell to the U. S. forces. General Winfield Scott then served as military Governor of Mexico City. Some of this information was obtained from Wikipedia searches & much additional interesting information can be found on Wikipedia searches which is not in this writeup. On the top section of the ribbon above the portrait of Scott there are a number of four leaf raised designs. I am able to count 14 of these raised decorative elements in the silk. This extremely fragile, amazingly historical, & very rare silk ribbon has never been trimmed or tampered with in any way. There is some wear & minor loss of silk at the edges. The silk behind the squiggles at the edge is thinner, as made, than was the middle of the ribbon with the printed designs. This adds significantly to the drama of the ribbon when it is held up to the light. The precise condition of the ribbon is visible in the pics.We guarantee this item to be original as described & we offer a full & prompt refund if you are not satisfied & if the item is returned in the same condition within 3 days of receipt.
