Charles has made over 15,000 kaleidoscopes in his career and counting, each made completely by Charles himself. The exterior of 4x4 is made of slumped stained glass and is four sided. As if it has four wings - the glass is shaped by softening it in a kiln over a mold, then cut and assembled. The soldering on the scope is smooth and clean. The object case turns freely and smoothly. The eyepiece allows easy viewing with a larger than usual lens. Slumped glass kaleidoscopes are rare, and it is not common to see the beautiful shaped made in glass such as this kaleidoscope exhibits. The interior of 4x4 shows a 4 point mandala image. The image is a complex of color and shaped using Charles lamp worked glass pieces which compliment the exterior color. There is a dry sealed ampoule with bits of glass to enhance the viewing possibilities. The 4x4 measures 3.5 x 10 inches and is signed and dated by the artist. It is not available any longer as this limited edition is closed out. This scope was made in 1999 and is in mint condition and has been cared for and dusted regularly.
