FINE ANTIQUE CARVED IVORY & ENGRAVED SILVER KNIFE, PEN, PENCIL COMBINATIONCIRCA 1840s Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Description: THIS IS PRE-BAN ANTIQUE IVORY OVER 100 YEARS OLD, CONFORMS WITH EBAYS RULES, AND IS EXEMPT FROM ANY REGULATIONS OR RESTRICTIONS! I WILL SHIP THIS ITEM ONLY TO THE USA! Fine Antique Carved Ivory & Silver engraved Gentleman or Lady's combination knife, dip pen, and pencil set, Circa 1840's. This Gentleman or Lady's accessory could be carried in their pocket, and also used as a desk accessory. Only a learned Gentleman or Lady who know how to read and write during this period, and would have had to be wealthy to afford a Carved Ivory & silver engraved piece like this one. This exquisite piece is 3 7/8" long X about 3/8" in diameter. The carved Ivory handle resembles the trunk of a tree with 12 circular raised patterns that appear as if they were cut off branches from a tree trunk. The circular silver throat has 2 grooves and 2 line engravings. At this end, there are two long slender slots, each with a small silver hand engraved piece in a double shell pattern that acts as the knob to slide either the mechanical pencil (which was quite innovative for the time); or, the silver shaped dip pen with a brass point used for dipping into an ink well and writing or affixing one's signature to a document. Both shell embellished knobs slide, but I use my finger nail to push the connecting rod underneath to move the pencil or pen, rather than pulling on the delicate silver decorations. The opposite end of this set has a single pen knife blade that is about 1 1/2" long, unsharpened, and Maker marked "STAND", and "T. RENSHAW & SON" in 3 lines. This pen blade would be used for opening envelopes, cutting string, or even sharpening a Goose quill if preferred, instead of using the dip pen or while the pencil was in use. The blade has a long pull as found on early style blades, along with one noticeable spot of spider aging on the obverse side; otherwise, the blade has all of it's original crocus of Iron final polish. STAND is their trademark name, and this firm began in Sheffield, England in 1840. There is one thin crack to the Ivory that starts at the base of one of the slots, along with expected aging and coloration of the Ivory over time, but is not distracting overall. This is an unusual and interesting desk accessory and conversation piece that is over 150 years old, and in excellent+ condition.
