You are bidding on a beautiful English Church Sterling Silver Chalice, the most important of all the church vessels. The maker’s mark on the base reads: “? W&S” (I cannot decipher the maker’s first initial), the city of Birmingham mark which is the anchor, the lion passant sterling mark & the assay date letter “B” which corresponds to 1926. This silver chalice is further marked with lion passant sterling mark & assay date letter on the base of the cup, and, the lion passant sterling mark on the nut at the bottom. I think this Priest cup or goblet is made for the Catholic church. The heavy gauge hand hammered and chased vessel is gold plated, with the silver coming though in the raised areas. The stem has a knob with letters and a cross on each of the hexagonal faces. The wide floral decorated base is a scalloped & pointed dodecagon. The cup, in its upper portion is has a band of calligraphy and embellished with floral sprays in relief. The cup is narrow at the bottom, and is gradually wider as it approaches the mouth. The height is 8 ½”; base is 6 3/8” wide; and the cup is 4 ¼” wide at the mouth. Weight: 660 grams=21.22 troy oz If you know anything about this remarkable artifact, I would like to learn from you.
