Description
*Please read full description before placing your bid* Offered for your consideration is an Art Deco Alabaster Emerson"Tombstone" AU-190 Catalin Tube Radio made circa 1937. John Sideli in his book “Classis Plastic Radios of the 1930s and 1940s” calls this radio “A very beautiful and almost elegant design with a well designed and sensitively used grille cloth woven in herring-bone pattern.” This radio is in excellent condition; the cabinet has been cosmetically restored/repaired. Email me with any questions. Please see full condition report below. This radio retains its factory original knobs and playing chassis. The herringbone grill cloth is new old stock and is clean with no detracting stains, holes, or deterioration. The chassis is untested. I have hand refinished the cabinet to its original Alabaster/Pearl color to display the marbleization expertly. This was done completely by hand with no machine sanding. A stunning birdseye effect of the catalin is displayed on the front! If you are looking for a handsome and affordable addition to your collection, please consider this beauty. Please email me with any questions. I have several other choice condition art deco vacuum tube radios listed currently including a stunning pre-war brazilian onyx green Fada Temple, a stunning alabaster with red trim Fada Dip Top #711, and two absolutely gorgeous large Addison Skyscraper catalin bakelite radios. Be sure to view my other auctions as most are offered with no reserve. MAKE- Emerson MODEL- AU-190, "Tombstone" or "Cathedral" YEAR- 1937 CASE MATERIAL- Catalin, the Gem of Plastics SIZE- 7 3/8” W x 10” H x 5 1/8” D CONDITION- This radio is in excellent condition now containing no cracks, chips, nicks, dings, deep scratches, or tube burns. The knobs are factory original catalin; the grill cloth is in excellent condition and is new old stock. The cabinet has been hand refinished/polished back to its original color when sold new in 1937. The repair is difficult to detect without close inspection, but is on the left side at rear edge dead center. It appears that this radio had an after market speaker jack installed and that has been removed and the area filled with vintage same color alabaster catalin. No paint or clear coat. The Emerson water slide decal is a perfect replacement as is the clear dial lens and cardboard back. Email me with any questions. CHASSIS/PLAYING CONDITION-The chassis is untested. Electronic restoration is available for an additional cost by estimate. As a reminder, these vintage catalin radios are not recommended for everyday use, nor should they be played for extended periods of time as that could cause tube burns to the cabinet.
