Description
Early 1840s-1850s, original, U.S. Officers, Mock Eaglehead Saddle with quilted seat & leather hooded wood stirrups. This is a high quality saddle that was popular in the Mexican War & used by both sides in the American Civil War. The saddle is in great condition with some old repairs on the seat which are hardly noticeable. This mock Eaglehead saddle has a black seat with relief work of Eagle wings, stars & what looks to be dogs. Nice leather covered pommel with worn place at the back which is consistant with where the carried a rifle or carbine. Very nice, thick, russet skirts with relief in leather of sunburst, oval & star in the center all around the edges of the skirts. Leather stirrups straps in russet leather ending with the original leather hooded wooden stirrups. The hoods have in the center a star shaped floral design. The cantle on this saddle in great condition with tarred back which was for waterproofing. At the bottom of the cantle is three iron rings for tieing on the valise or other articles of the Officer. Padded inner skirts on this saddle are still intact with the leather straps for the belly bands or girth. The bottom of the saddle is made of heavy cotton canvas which is there but worn in a couple of places. This early US Officer saddle is in solid condition with all original leather, straps & stirrups. A rare saddle to find these days. Will still accept cashiers checks, moneyorders or personal check with the normal clearing period.
