Description
Magnificent Dayton Butcher's Turning Counter Scales Antique 1913 American. Black metal and brass and gilt. Height 32", width 19", depth 19". Very top gilded sign says "THE COMPUTING SCALE COMPANY DAYTON OHIO USA" Front rectangular vertical brass plate 5x8cm says "patents 1895-1913 no 144, serial no. 463835, capacity 20 lbs." At rear, brass and glass window 2x3",(5x8cm.) for customer viewing. FEATURE! - UNDER SCALE's BASE IS LARGE IRON WHEEL TURNTABLE 30 cm diameter. SMALL LEVER ON LOWER RHS (about 5 cm long) RELEASES THIS WHEEL SO AS TO EASILY TURN THE SCALES TOWARDS THE LIGHT FOR EASIER READING BY THE SHOPKEEPER IN THE PRE ELECTRIC LIGHTING DAYS. On top sits white oval alabaster tray. These scales came originally from a huge old general store in Mortlake near Camperdown in Victoria, Australia where they were used for nearly 100 years. A truly magnificent scale! I am and have been a licenced antiques dealer for 36 years and specialise in beds and scales! I love them and love it when the scales go home back to America sometimes. My shop was once a hardware shop for 60 years from 1902 so they probably used a Dayton Scales too on the counter. I am and have been an antique dealer for 36 years and love making things more beautiful. Please see my excellent Feedback and my Ebay Store.
