This is not the usual small Christmas cards that are sent out by the thousands. This Christmas Gift is approximately 11 x 14” overall. It depicts a photograph of the Blair House, taken by the Signal Corps. OUR PHOTOS DO NOT DO THIS FINE PIECE JUSTICE. IT IS TOO LARGE TO SCAN AND VERY HARD TO GET A GOOD CAMERA PICTURE. (See Mary Seeley's book - "Season's Greetings from the WHITE HOUSE", page 64.) The President presented this Christmas Gift only to his personal staff at a Christmas reception on December 22. (In 1951 the White House staff would have been very small compared to today) This particular one came from one of the many retired “backstairs” White House employees that I had the good fortune to meet over the years. This black and white Christmas photo measures approximately 6 ½” x 10” with wide, off-white margins; the top and side margins are approximately 2” wide and the bottom margin is approximately 2 ½”. Beneath the picture of The Blair House it reads: “Blair House ~ Temporary home of the President during the reconstruction of the White House 1948-1951”. The raised Presidential Seal is to the left of the printed Christmas Greeting: “CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT AND MRS. TRUMAN. ~ 1951”. This Presidential Christmas Gift print is in EXCELLENT CONDITION ~~ one very slight crease in upper top right hand corner of margin which would not be notice after proper framing. President Harry S Truman and First Lady Bess Truman lived in the Blair House from November 1948 until March 1952. The Blair House is the official Presidential guest house, located across from the White House. It was here, in front of The Blair House, in November 1950, that Puerto Rican nationalists attempted the assassination on President Truman. He was unharmed and was taking a nap upstairs. However, one Secret Service officer was killed and two others wounded. For the history buff, The Blair House has an interesting history. The house was built in 1810 for the FIRST Surgeon General. At that time it was one of the most fashionable homes in the capitol city. It was purchased in 1930 by Francis Blair, a newspaper publisher and advisor to President Andrew Jackson. Blair’s son later inherited the house and he became the postmaster general for President Lincoln and became one of his most rusted advisors. Today The Blair House is a complex of several building which is used for distinguished White House guest and their staffs. Bid with confidence.
