Description
The gently risqué American Beauties novelties—which doubtless inspired troop morale immeasurably during the final months of World War II—are Gum, Inc.'s treasured contribution of the famous "good girl" art to the world of trading cards. Presented is a very scarce counter-sales display placard that once held twelve 4-card cello packs of Beauties; three of those sealed packs are still stapled to the 8-1/4" x 12-3/4" cardboard fixture, and a fourth is present with its contents loose. R59's were sold in several configurations—usually as paper-banded, 12-card "packs," or in sheets of nine designs apiece—but this "Pin-Ups" display assembly demonstrates a particularly scarce and appealing manner of packaging. The blank-backed display is well-handled and concedes plenty of shelf wear (no doubt incurred at the hands of customers eager to examine the packs) as well as remnants of pack wrappers from the ones sold long ago. The four cards from the unit's single, opened pack are about NM with imprecise centering as is customary in the issue, and the three unopened cello's contain what appear to be more favorably aligned, untouched cards. It's amazing that this ephemeral piece has managed to survive, but even more mind-boggling is the sight of the item's three unsold packs filled with colorful "girlies" pin-up cards! (Who could have resisted them?)
