Description
Great archive of old Jeff Davis family history here! I was blown away to find these.Fresh to the market. From attic storage to Ebay.We are sorry about the pictures. If thy did not come out as well.My camera is not the best.Just ask and I will email you scans of the handwritten letters.Wonderful items here to pick up before Christmas! They are a total of 7 handwritten letters.Varina Jefferson Davis, has signed three of them and penned out three of these. Also their is a two page letter with this lot that is to Elizabeth Tillman, whom was also (Bettie).Writer on this one was the Nephew of Jefferson Daivs.Talks about his uncle Jeff...how his health is doing..Winnie...Mrs.Davis health...it was written a few months before the death of uncle Jefferson Davis! Also mentions the visitors at the Beauvoir Mansion...the types of people going their..makes you feel like your right their with them.Tells an inside story about the nephew and where he worked in Paris Kentucky...much more.Who I will tell you about...in that letter it is the only one addressed to Elizabeth. The others are signed and penned by Mrs.Davis.This two page letter is quite fasinating. As their is much information as to the Davis family...from J.Alexander(someone to research here)he is writing to Elizabeth telling of the Davis family...dated 1889.in the letter it refers to uncle (Jeff)Davis....apparently this was a relative of Jefferson Davis.talks about aunt Varina and Winnie(daughter of the davis's)he also mentions the Davis home in Mississippi-Beauvoir.Slight tears as age...In one of the letters from Varina. She has even drawn a picture of a gift in one of them in ink.She mentions that Mr.Davis(Jefferson Davis)her husband. Was on his deathbed and asked for "Bettie"an orphan girl who they took in when then found her walking down a road....I actually found a book that I will send to the lucky winner of this rar elot along with.It talks about her and how Mr.davis  wanted to have her sent for...These letters need further researching into.It has a wealth of information in them. Some of the ink is fading on them. One of them is greatly bright in the ink.I obtained these from a man that was related to Bettie whom was wed by his great, grandfather named Henry Hooks. You could write a book on this lot I bet...1000's of words that Varina has written in these letters.I will read them briefly to you.Their is much more to read over...A few slight tears to some as well.Anyway here we go...first one starts off speaking to Bettie speaking about Mrs.Hayes,Miss Winnie.Who was the daughter of Mrs.Davis.....how that they are at a little town called Athens near her telegraphing them...Mrs.Davis will be sending toys,Mrs.Davis speaks of her as her little child..I believe after reading this that Varina really held Bettie close to her as her own child.Next letter is written on two pages..written from the Hotel Merlbrough,NEW YORK MARCH.30,1893.In this letter I am not sure who she is writing to? I see a name of Pri..? at the top. This letter is very heartfelt..she is telling the person that she needs to purchase a train ticket for Bettie to come and stay with her..she is requesting help greatly! She tells of Mr.Davis when he was on his deathbed he loved Bettie very much..he loved her so much that he wanted her brought in from "Beauvoir to New Orleans"to help me nurse him..Mrs.davis writes of when she was first brought here she was taken with ilness...then by business.she left the child with friends..at pass Christian she became homesick..how that bettie is 18 now..her family will not let her go with Mrs.Davis..and she is free.Mrs.Davis speaks of illegally having rights over her..speaks of betties father trying to kidnap bettie...(apparently Bettie's father did not want Bettie to be with Mrs.Varina Davis in the 1890's period..)Mrs.Davis speaks of how she has supported two of the children for many years..her brother and sister.Mrs.Davis,also tells of how that the father will dispose of Bettie in a very unfamous disposal after he kidnaps her..actually Varina is pleading with this individual on the other end..she speaks of how she will be most grateful and in memory of Jefferson Davis as well...who was my husband..Last letter is written on both sides..included is a drawing of a lovely vessel she received as a gift. This letter is addressed Bettie as well. Wishing Bettie a happy new year..Speaks of Religious words..she speaks of a beautiful spoon she obtained from Bettie..Mrs.Davis,speaks of how her health is making her weak..she has no money this year..Our New Years passed very quietly..speaks of the sketch of the pot she received..she speaks of going to visit in the Autumn Mrs.Varina Davis also speaks of sending her love to Miss Munroe..and with miss Winnie....so more to read over here as well....the information I found on Bettie is in the book I wil include I found about her..if you have any other information on these people please send me a message.I will also list it to educate others..These letters have three separate signatures of Mrs.Davis as well. Here is a bit of info.on the relative I received these from.Betty(Elizabeth)Tillman was a ward that was taken in by Mr.and Mrs.Davis, when they found her running on a country road in Mississippi.Betty married a game warden named Henry Hooks whom was his great grandfather.Betty died in 1952 in New Orleans.I personally do not have values of this type of material.Totally unresearched pages of history! But rest assuredlly they are the real deal! If you go to Google.com,and type in key words  you will see for yourself. These belong in a Museum if their is one for the Davis family.. significance to a collector. These are all original from 1889-93.They are not copies. These are one of a kind bona fide original handwritten documents!  Check out what else we found out and about. You would want to look into all my other auctions as well! I combine shipping for you.Really neat pieces here from the past! Looks so much better in front of you. Will not be disappointed! If you wish to have close up scans sent to your email site. Please furnish them.We send you close up pics! It is worthy of study!
