Description
Current Lot Archivio Giuseppe Ungaretti (1888-1970) Remarkable set of documents, mainly including letters written in differing periods and to different correspondents by one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Italian poets of the twentieth century. This ensemble is divided into four sections: A) Four letters addressed to the Argentinean historian Antonio Aita: the first, typewritten with autograph signature dated Rome 19 April 1936, in reply to the invitation to partake in the IV International Congress of the P.E.N. Clubs. ' Ce sera pour mai une voie très vive de faire votre connoissance personelle ainsi que celle de tant d'autres écrivains argentins (..begging him on that occasion to organise for them a conference on the topics already discussed in France, in Spain and in Belgium. ' Voici les titres: o) Sentiment e mémoire danc l'oeu Situation de Leopardi dans lo poésie et lo culture d'aujourd'hui'. In the second, of great critical significance, dated 5 July × IV (1936), when commenting soundly upon the Italianist works of Aita - the essay on Italo Svevo and the essay on Mario Puccini - Ungaretti observes: ' Lo nostra novella, come Ella osservo, tende sempre o scoprire negli episodi dello vita umana, Il carattere umano, e anche quando insiste su porticolon; lo fo non moi per presentare delle macchiette, ma per dare maggiore risalto ad un momento dello natura umanA'. The third, dated Sao Paulo, 18/3/VII (1939), when commenting upon the essay of Aita, he adds 'Sopra alcuni punti che toccono lo prosa narrativo nostra, forse potrei dissentire, e, per esempio, sullo funzione che ho avuto sulle lettere europee il Boccaccia [..] è non solo il Balzac del suo tempo, il primo grande narratore europeo che metto in movimento tutto un periodo storico con tutte le sue classi sociali, è non solo il primo gronde prosatore che porti oll'arte popolare {..} le immense risorse dell'esperienza classico - come più tordi forò Rabelois in Francio - ma è anche in certe sue novelle, più audace e più nuovo di qualsiasi odierno rivoluzionatore etc. '. In the fourth, dated Rom 5/9/1962, he informs a friend that he has to abandon the idea of journeying to South America due to his state of health. B) Signed autograph letter complete with franked envelope addressed to the art critic and writer Arnaldo Beccaria (from postage stamp Barrano d'Ischia 17.7.35) containing personal information. C) Two letters addressed to the friend Vigna, both undated, but written in the Thirties. Domani parto per Roma e Ravenna {..} Telegrafami {..} se vieni con me a Ravenna a vedere i mosaici e a Venezia per vedere il Tirana'. The second: 'Sono stato in Puglia e pochi giorni primo avrei voluto venire a Civitavecchia a passare qualche ora con te [..] Ma penso presto di venire a sorprenderti nel tuo covo. Come stai? Lavoro?... ' D) A letter without any indication of addressee or any element of a personal nature, accompanied by some autograph lines written by wife. E) Letter dated 18/2/1962 with posted envelope addressed to a Finnish publisher ' raccoglitore di autografi m'illumino / d'immenso '. F) Two letters addressed to O. Nadal Professeur à lo Sorbonne (complete with posted envelope), the first dated Rome 19 × I957 referring to the invitation to join the Committee formed for the critic edition of the Jeune Parque; the second dated Rome 28.I.1958, acknowledging receipt from the correspondent ' la mognifique édition critique de la Jeune Parque [...] followed by an ample and engrossing comment to the poem by Paul Valéry. G) Letter dated 20/5/1947 by which he authorizes the correspondent to reproduce the poem Fiumi accompanied by an autograph letter signed by I. Paulhan on int. paper. H) Intense and vibrant letter dated 'Rome, 18.8.1951' by which he informs the correspondent (James Soby) about the Quadrennial project entailing an Exhibition on Modigliani. 'Il serait nécessaire ce très grand artiste soit honoré et rendu populaire de plus en plus dons ce pays qui était le tien'. He requests accordingly that U.S. collectors and museums undertake the commitment to lend the works of Modigliani housed in the United States. Attached thereto is a typewritten letter signed by Enzo Carli on int. paper 'Soprintendenza ai Monumenti e alle Gallerie. 'Dated Siena, 8 September 1951', addressed to Prof. James Thrall Soby at Farmington (Connecticut) acknowledging receipt of a copy of the letter sent to Ungaretti in which he confirms his willingness to cooperate in the retrospective showcasing of the works by Modigliani in respect of which Carli had been appointed to manage the exhibition on behalf of the IV Quadrennial of Rome. Also attached thereto are two draft letters, the first by Carli, who translates the preceding version in English, and the second, in the same handwriting, which transcribes the letter that Ungaretti had sent to Prof. James Soby as referred to above. l) Two typed letters addressed to Galen Williams, The Poetry Center New York. The first dated 5 February 1968 (in English) accepting the invitation from The Poets Center to go to New York between end April to the 10th May in that year, whilst the second, dated 8 May 1968 (in Italian), abandoning the idea to go to New York: ''Purtroppo i miei 4 volte 20 anni hanno nsentito dei viaggi e delle fatiche di questi ultimi mesI; e il medico mi ha sconsigliato doll'intraprenderne oltre'. K) Amicable and cordial letter addressed to the English literary critic Bernard Wall dated 4.4.1957: 'Leggo assiduamente The Twentieth Century. Anche per le cure che le dedico, è rivisto eccellente'. L) Beautiful photograph (18.5 × 22.5 cm.) of Giuseppe Ungaretti, Carlo Emilio Gadda and Pier Paolo Pisolini grouped together.
