This fantastic, Tintype Photo measures approx. 3 1/4" x 4 1/4" and is mounted in its original, brass matt, brass binding and cover glass as would be expected of a cased image of the period (this tintype does not have a case but likely did at one time). The Photo has a 3 cent, hand canceled, Proprietary Revenue Stamp attached on the back. The style of the image and the Revenue Stamp date this outstanding Tintype Photo to the Civil War period. This is a full length image of a Sailor wearing a uniform consistent with some worn by Union Sailors during the War. Unfortunately he wears his hat tilted back on his head and we are unable to see if there is anything written on his hat band. Over the years we have handled hundreds of Civil War Soldier tintypes similar to the image offered here but we have owned less than a handful of Navy Sailor images anything like this one!!     This simply, ca1864 Quarter Plate Tintype Photo is in excellent condition. The Image is clean and crisp with sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. There are no significant surface scratches, no bends, no flaking and no surface damage of any kind to the Tintype. There is a halo of tarnish at the matt opening testifying to the fact that the matt and cover glass are original. A very rare and very attractive, ca1864 U. S.
