Description
1857 Charleston slave tag or badge for the occupation of Servant, badge number 1985. Excavated and put through an electolytic process to stabilize it and to prevent it from deteriorating into a lump of copper. Not abrasively cleaned. Heavy ground action. Tiny, through and through pinholes at the "5" in the 1985 as it was a deep punch, otherwise no through and through holes. No cracks. The numbers and Servant are clear and visible. Charleston is barely visible because of ground action. Measures approximately 2' across. Weighs 5.5 grams. Purchased by me from one of the better known diggers (if not the best known). Independently authenticated by NCS, Numistmatic Conservation Services which is an affiliate of NGC, Numistmatic Guaranty Corporation, and their photo authentication, numbered and bar coded is included. (Number and bar code partially obscured to prevent the internet pirates from copying it). Slave tags have been documented in Charleston and Charleston Neck, South Carolina, only. Each year the production of tags was let by the city to specific metal workers or jewelers. There will be no "variations" within any year for the appearance, size or material composition of tags. Tags are well documented and there are ample references. Some of the reproductions are good, most are not. Refer to the book, "Slave Badges and the Slave Hire System in Charleston, South Carolina, 1783-1865 by Harlan Greene, Harry S. Hutchins, Jr. and Brian E. Hutchins. The price included registered shipping within the United States. US shipping only. This is a hobby, not a living for me, and it remains enjoyable only if it is fun for everyone; therefore, I have a liberal return policy on everything I trade. Thank you for trading with me on Ebay!
