Description: A superb example of this regiment's shako in near mint condition. Black felt hat with lacquered leather top and a brass badge in the shape of Russian Imperial eagle over a crescent with a regimental number. A brass leather backed chinscale, leather visor. Canvas liner and leather sweatband. Rarely seen original red Etishket cord with a knot and yellow / green pompon. Maker's mark БОКГМАНЪ (Bokgman) on the brass circle that holds the chinscales. Condition: Superb original condition, though shows some wear especially on the liner and minor age craquelures on the lacquered leather. A Bit of History: This type of shako was in use between 1843 and 1855 during the reign of the Emperor Nicholas I. During this time the Russian army was involved in the following conflicts: Expansion in Caucasus, the battle of Timisoara in 1849 against the Hungarians, 1853 war with Turkey over Moldavia and Wallachia which progressed to the Crimean war with English and French armies in 1854-56 culminating by the siege of Sevastopol.
