Thank you.       John Francis Sr    Stanly Neptune The earliest root clubs were used in hand-to-hand combat during the 1600s and early 1700s. The roots of the birch saplings were trimmed of all the small roots and the larger ones were pointed to make the war club more effective. On these earliest clubs there were no carvings in the root burl and no chip carving on the handle, but later, carvers added decorative chip carving. From the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s carvings on root clubs seem to have represented spirit beings with their faces emerging from the root burl.   Information from Stan Neptune, master carver of the Penobscot Nation.   Hugga Dana        Hi Marilyn Well the collation is something I have been putting together for almost 17 years now. I was hoping to start an exhibit to travel all over the United States. Stanly,Rose and Joan Lester have been over to the house in Maine to Photo and document the collection. I have Attached a photo of Stanly at the house with one of his clubs that is in the book( We're still here). All of my clubs and walking sticks are up for sale. I have worked hard to put all this together and was hoping that it would help to let people know about the  Northeast clubs and the carvers. To hold the work and see what the carver saw. To know that the spirit of a caver is in your hand weather it be 200 years old or one of Huggs or his farther is so nice. You should feel the overwhelming spirits that 110 clubs and 29 walking stick gives off. I also have papers from 1700 to 1980s on the Maine Natives. How our Elders were treated and much more. The clubs are about 50, 50 on the ages. I tried to collect from the oldest to the new art work and every thing in between. Let me know if you are interested in the hole collection or just some.   Best to you. Richard
