Description
Thank you for viewing my auction. I am now selling over a thousand items which I purchased in the 1950’s-80, at the London auctions, Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Phillip’s (now Bonham’s). Much of it is ancient jewelry which was assembled in the Victorian period from elements found in the archeological excavations of that period. They were widely publicized and wearing such jewelry was fashionable for the elite. Because they reassembled and in most cases incomplete, we are selling the individual elements so more collectors can enjoy them. We were inspired to do so by Robert Liu’s statement in Collectable Beads, that the average collector will be unable to own a single ancient bead. Each is certified authentic. In the early 1980s, several lots of Roman artifacts found in Sussex England, near the coast, in the area of Marden Castle came to auction at Phillips in London. They were found in 1856 and 1857 and the major pieces bore labels to that effect. WE HAVE SHOWN A LABELED PIECE WHICH IS NOT INCLUDED WITH THIS LOT BUT SHOWN FOR REFERENCE ONLY. England was completely subjugated by 100 AD and stayed so until about 300 AD and thus the artifacts may be dated to that interval. Among them was a small quantity of Roman glass beads. Industries such as bead making were brought with the Romans and these were surely made in England, not imported from Rome. Thus they are Anglo Roman and perhaps the only such beads you will encounter. We will supply certification of authenticity along with some supplemental information to the buyers. We have several different lots. For auction are 4 beads, 5.5-6.8 mm (over 1/4 inch), in condition as shown. They are hand wound and all vary somewhat as expected. The brown coloration is from the flint found in the area and is similar to carnelian which the Romans valued. Those who know the area , know that the downs are made of chalk and the rest is flint. Even the beaches are of stones, not sand. These are rare artifacts of Roman England. 42B8 Shipping is free Worldwide with the purchase of this item.
