CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE HUGE ESTATE Ends SATURDAY November 22nd!    ALL REASONABLE OFFERS CONSIDERED!!       This incredible oil painting reputedly resided in the extensive collection of Georg Josef von Eckart (b. 1723, d. 1791), Bishop of Mainz, Germany, and Titular Bishop of Joppe (also spelled “Ioppe”, the Holy Land), and this name (“Georg Eckart”) is written on the frame next to the date “1749”.  More research is required, no documentation has survived, but it is in a frame that is numbered as if it had been in a catalogued collection at one time.  The wooden frame is not pretty, but looks to be possibly as old as the painting, which we believe is at least 300 years old, but may date even earlier.               Note the red wax seals on the verso, evidence that this has been treasured for a very long time.  Additionally, there is a signature right in between these seals that we cannot make out.  A tiny flap of paper also hangs from the upper seal, with old ink writing, also hard to make out.         Of course, it isn’t just the wax seals that indicate this could be a tremendous discovery.  The fine detail evident in this superb creation just screams Old Master in the truest sense of the term.  Certainly, a gifted painter, at the level of “Rembrandt” could easily have painted it, it is that good, the sophistication, the quality -- it is as good as it gets.  Religious paintings like this are IMPOSSIBLE to find, and when you do, just forget about the price!  This is truly an exceptional opportunity!          BISHOP:  In ages previous, the Bishop was regarded as a real “Prince” of the Church.  In his diocese he was not merely an important clergyman, but also a ruler, with power and wealth that could be significant.  As such he was entitled to the income that was generated within his diocese, mostly from the properties owned by the Church, but income could derive from other enterprises maintained as well (such as wine production).  While in theory he was only a custodian or steward of monies in his control, in practice many Bishops believed that it was their duty to maintain a “lifestyle” appropriate to their rank, since the respect given them could also be commensurate with their “image” within the community.   Because they compared themselves to the nobility, it was natural that they might pursue many of the same interests.  For example, bishops often lived in quarters that were literally “palatial”.  Many would throw huge parties, inviting only the finest people in the community, with the music provided by an orchestra!  Certainly there were bishops who were collectors of many fine things, including the best art.  Of course, the tradition of the nobleman collecting the finest things goes back to ancient times.  Even wealthy priests, not encumbered by family concerns, could pursue their various ambitions, and might begin collecting worthy items long before they officially came to greater power.  The serious collecting of art is a lifetime pursuit after all, one can never begin too early.   This is a painting that was recognized even centuries ago for what it was, a rare masterpiece, and it was preserved accordingly.  Again, more research is required, the detailed history has been lost to the ages.  However, our consignor believes that this piece fell victim to the “modernization” of the Church several decades ago, and as many know, the current (and horribly ignorant) custodians of the Church, feverishly tried to distance themselves from anything “too Catholic” or sentimental, etc., in the aftermath of Vatican II.   Mistakes were made everywhere, we can attest to having witnessed things personally of this nature, where an old church was demolished, and religious art had been “mistakenly” left inside!  The resulting pile of rubble was a pathetic scene, but a few devout souls noticed, and precious items were “rescued”, in spite of the seemingly satanic efforts that were occasionally made to destroy our heritage.  Even putting the religious issue aside, it does seem almost “criminal” that so much genuine art, literal masterpieces were so callously cast aside.  Even today, it has been said that Rome itself would not have retained so much of it’s religious “treasure”, if it had not been for the Roman preservationist spirit.  In other words, it was NOT the (new) clergy who insisted on leaving the historic churches intact, it was essentially the people who would not endure the destruction of their heritage, just like they refused to forget their ancient roots, and have done well preserving so many beautiful objects from the days of the Empire.  Too bad other nations did not fare as well.   PLEASE, if you like this piece, if you want this piece, DO NOT let it pass you by!  You may never get another chance to own such a treasure, and we assure you, consignor is prepared to accept an extremely reasonable offer at this time.  OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS!   To PASTORS or priests who are looking to acquire this piece, be aware that our consignor is allowing $1,000 “donation discount” for you.  We agree with our consignor that it is important for churches to invest in tradition, and will also add another $200 from our commission.           OTHER ART FROM THE COLLECTION…   BEHEADING OF JOHN THE BAPTIST, c. 1600       JESUS CHRISTUS c.1881     THE TRINITY CROWNS OUR LADY, c. 1700     ILLUSTRATED MISSAL, 1771      ART INVESTORS:  If you recognize the value in these fantastic religious pieces, and you are considering purchasing more than one, please let us know!  We will take your offer to our consignor immediately, and we have found that consignors are most reasonable when considering serious offers from people who are prepared to invest, since we also will step-up and reduce our commission accordingly.  We want both parties to have a “win / win” transaction!
